Anti Rust Spray and Primers

A rust converter is a chemical product specifically designed to react with existing iron oxide (rust) and transform it into a stable, dark, protective layer. It halts the rusting process. A primer, by contrast, is a coating applied to bare or prepared metal to create a smooth, adherent surface for your paint to lock onto. Many of our anti rust products combine both functions, acting as a converter to neutralise existing rust while serving as a primer base for your topcoat.

While anti rust sprays are designed to treat rust, they cannot magically restore completely corroded or structurally weak metal. You must always remove loose rust, flaky scale, dirt, and grease with a wire brush or abrasive paper before application. Removing the loose debris allows the product to penetrate the remaining oxidation and bond effectively to the metal surface, which is essential for a reliable result.

Yes, in almost all cases, applying a topcoat over a treated surface is highly recommended. While rust converters create a stable layer, they are not intended to be a final finish. Applying a quality topcoat or clearcoat provides the final seal against moisture and oxygen, which is necessary to ensure the long term performance of the repair. Always check the drying time on the product data sheet before applying your topcoat.
