Car Paint Supplies Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to apply a clear coat over car paint?

For most modern automotive finishes, the answer is yes, a clear coat is essential. The majority of car paints sold today are a "basecoat/clearcoat" system. The basecoat provides the colour, but it dries to a flat, dull finish and has very little protection.

The clear coat is applied over the basecoat to provide:

    • Gloss and Shine: It delivers that deep, professional-looking lustre.
    • UV Protection: It prevents the sun from fading the coloured basecoat over time.
    • Durability: It creates a hard, protective layer against scratches, chemicals, and weather.

Without a clear coat, your basecoat colour would quickly degrade and would not have the expected gloss finish. Always check if your paint is a basecoat system that requires one.

How can I get a smooth, professional finish with spray cans?

Achieving a great finish with an aerosol is all about technique and preparation. Runs, patchiness, and a rough "orange peel" texture are common issues, but they can be avoided by following these key steps:

    • Preparation is Everything: The surface must be perfectly clean, dry, and sanded smooth. Use a degreaser to remove any wax or silicone before you start.
    • Warm the Can: For best results, let the can sit in a bowl of warm (not hot) water for 10 minutes. This increases the internal pressure and helps the paint atomise into a finer mist.
    • Perfect Your Technique: Hold the can 15-25cm (6-10 inches) from the surface. Spray in steady, overlapping passes, starting your spray before the panel and ending it after. Overlap each pass by about 50%.
    • Apply Light Coats: It is always better to apply 2-3 thin coats than one thick, heavy coat. A thick coat is far more likely to run and will take much longer to cure properly.

How do I blend new spray paint with my car's original paint?

    1. Prepare the Area: Sand the repaired section (with filler or primer) and then "feather" the edges by using a fine-grit sandpaper on the surrounding original paintwork. This creates a smooth transition.
    2. Apply Colour: Apply your colour basecoat over the primed repair. With each new coat, extend your spray slightly further out onto the sanded original paint. This creates the colour fade.
    3. Melt the Finish: The final step is crucial. Apply a new layer of 2K clear coat over the entire repair area, extending it well into the surrounding original paint. The solvents in the fresh clear coat will "melt" into the existing finish, unifying the surface and hiding the blend line, leaving a seamless gloss.
