Filler Primer Spray Paints Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint directly over filler primer?

Yes, you can paint directly over a filler primer, but for the absolute best results, a final sanding step is essential.

Filler primer is designed to be sanded smooth after it has fully cured. This process levels the surface, removes any texture from the spray itself, and ensures a perfectly flat foundation. After sanding, the surface is technically ready for your colour coat.

However, for a truly professional or show-quality finish, many painters apply a final sealer or a standard ground-coat primer over the sanded filler primer. This final, thin layer seals the repair area, creates a uniform colour base, and improves the adhesion and final gloss of your topcoat.

    • For a good finish: Sand the cured filler primer, then apply your colour coat.
    • For the best finish: Sand the cured filler primer, apply a sealer/ground-coat, and then apply your colour coat.

How do you use filler primer spray?

Using a filler primer spray effectively is a straightforward process that transforms a rough surface into a smooth one. Here is the correct method for a flawless result:

    1. Surface Preparation: The most crucial step. Ensure the surface is completely clean, dry, and free from any grease, wax, or rust. For best adhesion, the surface should be scuffed with sandpaper.
    2. Application: Shake the aerosol can vigorously for at least two minutes. Hold the can 10-12 inches from the surface and apply in light, sweeping coats, overlapping each pass by about 50%. This prevents runs and ensures even coverage.
    3. Building Coats: Apply 2-4 medium coats, allowing 5-10 minutes of "flash-off" time between each coat. This high-build formula will fill in minor scratches, pinholes, and other small surface imperfections.
    4. Curing and Sanding: Allow the primer to cure fully (check the can for specific times, usually several hours or overnight). Once cured, sand the primer smooth. Start with a medium-grit paper and finish with a fine grit to create a perfect, glass-like surface ready for paint.

Can I use a filler primer instead of body filler?

No, a filler primer cannot be used as a direct substitute for traditional body filler. The two products are designed to repair different levels of damage and work together in a repair system.

    • Body Filler: Is a thick, paste-like substance applied with a spreader. It is formulated to fill deep imperfections such as dents, gouges, and significant scratches. It's for major levelling work.
    • Filler Primer: Is a thick, high-build sprayable primer. Its job is to fill minor surface imperfections like shallow sanding scratches, pinholes in body filler, and slight surface texture. It creates a final, perfectly smooth surface over the entire repair area.

Think of it this way: use body filler to fix the dent, and then use filler primer to hide the fine scratches and make the repair invisible before you paint. Using filler primer on a deep dent would require dozens of coats and would not be stable.
