Paint Thinner

The primary uses for paint thinner are:

• Improving Paint Flow: Thinning a paint makes it less viscous, which helps it flow more smoothly from the brush, roller, or Spray Gun. This helps to eliminate brush marks and achieve a more even, professional-looking surface.
• Preparing Paint for Spraying: Most paints are too thick to be sprayed directly from the tin. Thinner is essential for reducing the paint to the correct consistency for it to be atomised properly by a spray gun.
• Cleaning Tools and Equipment: Thinner is highly effective at dissolving wet, uncured solvent-based paint, making it the ideal product for cleaning brushes, rollers, spray guns, and any spills.

It's important to note that paint thinner is for solvent-based paints only. For water-based paints like acrylics or emulsions, water is used as the thinning agent.

There is no single, universal ratio for thinning paint, as the perfect amount depends on several factors. However, the goal is always the same: to achieve the ideal viscosity for your specific setup.

Factors that influence the thinning ratio:

• The Paint Itself: Every paint has a different starting thickness.
• Your Spray Gun: Different types (HVLP, LVLP, Conventional) and nozzle sizes require different paint consistencies.

2. Start Low and Go Slow: Begin by adding a small amount of thinner, around 5% of the total paint volume. Mix thoroughly.
3. Perform a Viscosity Test: The best way to check is with a viscosity cup (like a DIN cup). You time how long it takes for the cup to empty; the paint's TDS will tell you the correct time in seconds.
4. The Stir-Stick Test (If you don't have a cup): Dip a mixing stick into the paint and lift it out.

• If the paint is too thick, it will run off in lumpy, "ropy" drips.
• If it's too thin, it will run off like water.
• If it's just right, it will flow off the stick in a smooth, consistent, unbroken stream.

5. Adjust as Needed: Gradually add small amounts more of thinner, mixing and testing each time, until you achieve that perfect, smooth stream.

Paint thinner is classified as hazardous waste, and it is crucial for both environmental and safety reasons that it is never disposed of improperly. Never pour paint thinner down the drain, into a sewer, or onto the ground.

1. The Best Option: Reuse It

• Pour the used thinner (from cleaning brushes, etc.) into a clearly labelled, sealed glass jar.
• Let the jar sit undisturbed for several days or weeks. The solid paint particles will sink to the bottom, leaving clean thinner on top.
• Carefully pour the clean thinner off the top into a new container. It is now perfectly good to be reused for cleaning tools in the future.
• Allow the paint sludge at the bottom of the jar to dry out completely into a solid block before disposing of it with your household waste.

• If you cannot reuse the thinner, you must take it to your local council's household hazardous waste (HHW) collection facility.
• Keep the thinner in its original, sealed container so it can be easily identified.
• Contact your local council or check their website to find the location and opening hours of your nearest hazardous waste disposal site. They will take it from you and dispose of it safely and legally.
